About the 5C
The Calhoun County Cancer Control Coalition was formed in late 2005 to reduce the cancer burden in Calhoun County through community collaboration. A presentation developed by the Calhoun County Public Health Department and the Family Health Center showed that, in Calhoun County, cancer is the number one reason for years of potential life lost and is second to only heart disease as the leading cause of death, as illustrated in these graphs:

The presentation also showed, as illustrated in the graph below, that the cancer rates in Calhoun County are much higher than the cancer rates for the State of Michigan.

5C is proud of the past accomplishments of the group, including:
  • Bringing the Colossal Colon® to the Calhoun County Fair in August 2006. “Coco,” as the Colossal Colon® is affectionately known, is a 40-foot long, 4-foot tall crawl-through model of the human colon, complete with examples of healthy colon tissue, various diseases of the colon, polyps, and various stages of colorectal cancer. “Coco” was visited by over 2,500 Calhoun County residents over the course of fair week.
  • Creating a survey to gather information about why Calhoun County residents are or are not receiving information and referrals for cancer screenings. The survey had over 500 respondents.
  • Encouraging a smoke-free air ordinance in Calhoun County. 5C is currently working with the Calhoun County Commission on this ordinance. Local businesses have instituted their own smoke-free air policies; including Schuler’s Restaurant in Marshall (as of February 2007) and Clara’s Restaurant in Battle Creek (as of March 2007).
  • Launching a County-wide awareness campaign for Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March 2007. The campaign included informational literature provided to employees of large businesses and organizations in the county; informational displays at Oaklawn Hospital, Battle Creek Health System, and Burnham Brook; posters in physician offices encouraging patients to talk to their physicians about screenings; an issue of Body, Mind & Spirit in the Battle Creek Enquirer featuring a cover photo and three articles written by local cancer specialists; and a letter to the editor campaign featuring letters written by physicians and cancer survivors.
5C looks forward to engaging the community in more activities to raise cancer awareness and help reduce the cancer burden in our county.
