Mission and Goals
Mission
Reduce the burden of cancer in Calhoun County through community collaboration.

Priority Areas

Tobacco/Lung Cancer Prevention
Goals
  1. By 2015, reduce from 30% to 23% the proportion of adults in Calhoun County who report tobacco use.
  2. By 2015, reduce from 13% to 6% the proportion of youth who report having smoked cigarettes one or more times in the past 30 days.
  3. By 2015, reduce public exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) by achieving 100% 24 hours/day, 7 days/week smokefree schools and 100% of worksites, bars, and restaurants that are smokefree 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.

Objectives

  1. Conduct counter-advertising strategies, especially targeting youth markets.
  2. Identify funding for local smoking cessation programs providing
    1. counseling and
    2. nicotine replacement therapy.
  3. Advocate for a Calhoun County Clean Air ordinance.
  4. Develop and promote physician/health care provider brief interventions providing advice to quit and referral resources.
  5. Institute a county level user fee on all tobacco products with revenue to fund locally needed cancer control initiatives.

Colorectal Cancer

Goal

By 2015, increase to 60% the proportion of people in Calhoun County who report having received colorectal screening. (Currently rate is 43%.)

Objectives

  1. Increase awareness of colorectal risks, prevention, and testing for early detection.
  2. Increase coverage for cancer screenings.
  3. Improve screening rates for colorectal cancer.
Breast Cancer

Goals

  1. By 2010, 80% of Calhoun County women 40 yrs of age and over will receive age-and risk-appropriate breast cancer screening with clinical breast examination and mammography and those numbers will increase to 85% by 2015.
  2. By 2010, 80% of Calhoun County women under 40 yrs of age will receive age-and risk-appropriate education and screening services for breast cancer and those numbers will increase to 85% by 2015.

  1. Increase awareness of breast cancer risks, prevention, and testing for early detection.
  2. Increase coverage for cancer screenings.
  3. Improve screening rates for breast cancer.
